Lightroom Classic Reflection Removal creates pink and colored artifacts on Intel Macs with AMD Radeon GPUs

Hello,

Reflection Removal (Remove > Distraction Removal > Reflections) produces a heavily corrupted image on my Intel iMac. The result is a saturated pink/magenta image with yellow, cyan and black artifacts. The image is unusable at any Amount value. A screenshot is attached.

System

  • Lightroom Classic 15.6, and the same result in Camera Raw (Photoshop)
  • iMac Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019
  • CPU: 3.7 GHz 6-core Intel Core i5
  • GPU: AMD Radeon Pro 580X 8 GB
  • RAM: 64 GB
  • macOS Sequoia 15.8.1 (this Mac is not supported by macOS Tahoe)

Test file

  • Raw DNG, Nikon Z camera, NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S at 70 mm, 1/80 s, f/4, ISO 640

What I tried, without any change in the result

  • Setting Use Graphics Processor to Custom, with GPU for display only
  • Setting Use Graphics Processor to Off in Lightroom Classic
  • Disabling the GPU in Camera Raw preferences
  • Restarting the applications
  • Reapplying the effect from a clean state

Other AI features, like noise reduction, are not affected .

Expected result: Reflections removed from the image.

Actual result: Corrupted output as in the screenshot.

Since disabling the GPU in both applications does not change the output, it looks like the AI model runs through macOS Metal or Core ML on the AMD GPU regardless of the app setting. Similar reports have appeared in the community forums for Intel Macs with Radeon 500 and 5000-series GPUs. Could you either fix this or provide a CPU fallback for these machines?

Thank you.

Adobe stubbornly refuses to have LR’s AI commands obey the setting of Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor -- they always use the GPU.

Similar reports have appeared in the community forums for Intel Macs with Radeon 500 and 5000-series GPUs.

Apple and AMD released a buggy graphics driver in Mac OS 26.3, and many people with Intel Macs have reported problems with LR’s AI commands since then:

The only known workaround is to roll back to Mac OS 26.2, which is tedious:

Given that Apple dropped support for Intel Macs in Mac OS 27, and AMD hasn’t been selling GPUs to Apple since 2020, I think it is unlikely at this point they will release fixed drivers for the AMD GPUs.

Thanks Amshul and John for your answers, seems that the owners of iMac 27” Intel base are forgotten by Apple and AMD.

Hi @rafelf27826816,

Thank you for the detailed report. I understand how frustrating it is to get a corrupted result from Reflection Removal.

I confirm that this is a known compatibility issue affecting some Intel-based Macs with older AMD Radeon GPUs, including the Radeon Pro 580X.

The team has investigated this, and unfortunately, changing the GPU settings does not provide a workaround. A CPU processing alternative was also evaluated, but it does not provide a viable fallback. At this time, there is no fix or supported workaround planned for this specific hardware configuration.

I’ve documented your specific configuration with the team. Please let me know if you have any further questions or need help with anything else.

Best,
Anshul Saini
