What happened?  Lightroom has been getting slower and slower on importing photos, but the new Classic version is glacial. What happened and how can it be fixed?

In as test, it took 37 sec to import 21 Canon dmg files of approx 20 Mb each. This is a small sample, when I import a shoot with 200-400 photos, it takes a very long time. It didn't used to be so bad before LR Classic, so I really never measured it. Here are my computer specs:

Mac Pro 2009 with AMD Radeon HD 7950.

Here are the details from Lightroom:

x

Camera Raw virtual memory: 190MB / 8191MB (2%)

Camera Raw real memory: 190MB / 16384MB (1%)

Besides the obvious, 'buy a new 8-core computer', what changed with Classic and what can be done to help it until the new Mac Pros come out in a couple years?
