Lightroom Classic Snapshots Change when Revisited Later

Let me start by saying that I keep Lightroom updated to the latest version, often within a week of release. (Maybe that's a mistake?)

As I develop a photograph, I'm very careful to create snapshots with clear labels.

For example, I always use the auto-generated date/timestamp, and add details like "Cropped" or "Healing" or "Masks."

When the processing is finalized, I add another snapshot labeled with "Final."

Later, when I create proof versions with various ICC profiles, I start with the "Final" version, make my proof edits, and then save new snapshot(s) with the auto-generated name of the ICC profile.

In theory, this works well.

However, sometimes I go back to an older photo and want to click on one of the snapshots, and find that it has lost its prior edits.

For example, I'll hover over the "Final" snapshot, and it's turned into some dull, dark, desaturated version of what "Final" used to be. That snapshot is different from the one before and after it, but it's definitely not the "Final" that it once was, nor does it look like the image that I see when I'm not hovering over the snapshot.

See first two attached screenshots: one is the "Final" version opened, and two is with my cursor hovering over the "Final" snapshot.

This can happen to the ICC snapshots as well. See remaining three attached screenshots: three is the Platine ICC virtual copy opened, four is with my cursor hovering over the Platine ICC snapshot. Five is the Polar Luster Metallic ICC virtual copy opened. When I hover over the PLM snapshot it still looks the same; IOW this snapshot has not changed ... yet.

To try to work around this issue, I've started to use virtual copies every time I create a proof version, saved with the name of the ICC profile. I have mixed feelings about this approach, as my library is starting to be overrun with these virtual copies.

Further, if I happen to create an enhanced version of a "Final" image later, and then delete the non-enhanced original, I learned the hard way that all of the virtual copies of the non-enhanced original are also deleted, which means I've lost ICC versions that I've printed previously.

I'm trying to run a business where I sell limited edition prints. Needless to say, this has created a few headaches.

So what's going on with these shifting snapshots? I've read elsewhere that snapshots and history were deleted in 13.x updates, but mine aren't deleted*, they're still there, it's just that the snapshots have changed.

* (well, that did happen to some old ones, but I thought that had to do with moving and combining libraries)
