Question

Lightroom Classic vs Lightroom

Adobe CC notified me that I have updates and one was to install Lightroom Classic and the other was Lightroom. Both programs (shortcuts} are on the screen and both programs have their individual folders on my HD. My question is, Do I need both programs or does Classic supersede  standard?

OK, color is correct, spelling is correct but it is not rounded. I'll assume at some future update it will change. It works, as far as I can tell and I guess that is what counts.

    Lightroom CC 2015.3

    Lightroom Classic CC 7.0.1

    Both are turquoise

    Phothshop is blue.

OK, 2015.13 is the current CC-subscriber version of Lightroom 6. You probably don't need it because you have Lightroom Classic which you should find is faster than 2015.13 and also has the new Range Mask feature in local adjustments.

I'll paste the icons below for reference and colour matching

Gotcha, I like analogies, thank you. Funny thing is that neither of the icons are rounded. Oh well

I'm always worried that one ends up arguing about the analogy, but I think that one works!

I was going from your "Adobe CC notified me that I have updates and one was to install Lightroom Classic and the other was Lightroom". If neither icon is rounded, it may be that one is Lightroom 6 and the other is the updated "Classic" version. The new all-electric Lightroom CC has a rounded icon and is turquoise rather than blue. Try opening them as seeing what you have - Lightroom 6/Classic has a Help > System Info menu which tells you what version it is, while LRCC has a leaf on its opening splash screen.

So I can essentially "delete" the original?

Well, it depends on which product suits you. If in doubt, keep Classic.

The new rounded icon Lightroom, Lightroom CC, hasn't yet got important features and the  features it does have are simplified, plus it stores your originals in the cloud. It is like Lightroom Mobile, but running on your PC/Mac. Do you want that?

If you simply want to continue as you have done before, you keep Classic which is the next stage of real Lightroom which people have been using for years.

I liken it to electric cars. You've been happily driving an Audi TT but they are renaming it TT Classic and are calling their new electric car TT. It's vaguely similar with 4 wheels and the right badge. But the interior isn't finished and you don't know when they'll fit a steering wheel or mirrors. Charging points are hard to find, and some features don't work properly if you're not on the internet. Electric cars make sense for some people now, and may be the future. Buy one now or wait and see?

Classic directly replaces what you've been using before.

The other Lightroom with the rounded icon is a new thing - like Lightroom Mobile on your PC/Mac. It stores everything in the cloud.
