Question

lightroom classice 13.3.1 Windows 11 suddenly very slow in editing

Hi folks, My system has been getting slower and slower over the past 3 weeks and just today my editing slowed to a crawl. I am masking using brush tool and have to wait 10-15 seconds for changes to show up on the screen. Additionally, the cursor gets hung on the brush tool so I can't move sliders until it has finished logging the brushstrokes.

Laptop works fine for all other programs.

I added a Wacom Cintiq to my system about a month ago but other than that have made no changes that I am aware of.

What I have tried:

optimize catalogue set to happen every time I quit LR

cache size increased to 50GB

"synch with LR" is paused

auto-write to XMP is off

laptop scanned for viruses and nothing else is running slow

starting and restarting both laptop and LR

Thanks for any suggestions!

"NVidia (R) GeForce(R) RTX (TM) 4070 with 8GB GDDR6"

"Graphics Processor Info:

Init State: GPU Unsupported"

This indicates at least one of the problems -- LR doesn't recognize your graphics processor. To address that:

1. Update to the latest Nvidia Studio driver by downloading it from here:

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/232934/

(Don't rely on Windows Update, your computer manufacturer's crapware update, or even the Nvidia utility.)

2. If LR's Help > System Info still doesn't recognize the graphics processor, give it a kick in the seat by following steps 2 - 5 of Solution 3 in this help article:

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html#solution-3

Hi John,

Thanks for catching this. I did both steps and it appears that problem is solved. Does this look right?  Help>System info

Graphics Processor Info:

DirectX: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU (32.0.15.6590)

Init State: GPU for Export supported by default

User Preference: Auto

Further exploration has revealed that LR is only struggling with one particular image and it’s a 535MB image. It is an image I have worked on a lot – many masks, lots of brushwork. I am guessing that is the problem. Does that make sense?

Thanks, Elise

Looks good.

Many masks with very large amounts of brush strokes can cause LR to slow down indeed.

How much free space in percent (yes %) on that C drive. Looking for at least 20%, some say 25% free.

the C drive is 88% free space
