Question

Lightroom file structure

Hi,

I just upgraded to lightroom classic cc (from lightroom 5).  In the past (2017), I organized my files by general and then I had a subfolder called "headshots" where I could collapse or view the files as needed.  When I load files, I do load them into this format (where the catalog is stored).  However, when I upgraded and started a new file in 2018, lightroom doesn't organize my files the way it did in 2017 so all the files are mixed up in my navigator, simply organized alphabetically.  Can someone please explain how to get it to do what it used to do?  It makes it so difficult to handle my workflow this way.  Thanks in advance  .

It is up to the user to set the location where images are copied to during the import process.

Sure this newest update may have reverted the program to its default setting but you should always check all the settings are what you want before you click the Import button in the import window.

It is best to set everything up then make a Preset so you can always revert to those setting if need be.

dj_paige thank you.  I'm not having a problem with the import.  The files are in the right place.  Just can't see them in my navigator as I want to.

Show us a screen capture of how you had them organized in LR 5.

There is no change in the capability of how your photos are stored.

The upgrade may have changed defaults, you have to set them back to whatever they were in your old Lightroom 5. Since we don't know what the old setting in LR 5 were, you haven't provided enough details, you can re-launch Lightroom 5 and check the settings.

A better approach (if it works) is to upgrade your LR 5 catalog to Lightroom Classic CC, and the defaults all should come along into the new Lightroom Classic CC catalog -- that's what happened when I upgraded.

I did upgrade and moved the catalog into cc when it asked, but it must have changed my defaults. I tried changing all the default settings but it still won't organize them as before. Thanks.
