"Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo." error message when access photos on hard dr

I suddenly can no longer edit photos in Lightroom that are stored on my hard drive. I connected my hard drive and when I open the develope module it says "file cannot be opened".  When I look at the photos in the library module there is an exclamation mark in the top right corner and when I click on it a message pops up that says "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo. You will not be able to make adjustments to the photo". This happened out of the clear blue. I am using Lightroom 6. Thanks for any help.

Are the folders containing the photos managed by Dropbox? Dropbox is rolling out a new version for Mac OS that changes the location of its folders:

It obviously sounds as though your hard drive is failing. Try shutting down your Mac then reboot with the hard drive already connected, then try Lightroom again.

If the same problem occurs, try a different cable (and port) to connect the hard drive. If it still happens you might want to run some diagnostics on the drive.

Do you have an up-to-date backup of the contents of that drive?
