Lightroom images not updating external edited content.

Lightroom images not updating preview with edited content within Library and sometimes the Develop module after external editing within Photoshop.

This has been an ongoing issue with Lightroom Classic many versions back - it’s well overdue a fix!

The current Lightroom workaround with limited success is to right-click the image - Metadata/Read Metadata from File.

If that doesn’t fix it, you have to remove the image from Lightroom and synchronise the folder the image resides in to re-import the image in place again. This always corrects it. However, it makes for a very tedious workflow - So I'd love a bug fix for this!

Oh, and by the way, optimising the catalogue doesn’t seem to help either.

Running latest versions of Lightroom Classic 14.2 - Photoshop 26.5.0

Mac Studio M2 Ultra - 64GB - Sequoia 15.4

I noticed the same, but check if you have lightroom in "develop" mode. Now lightroom does not update the image if you have it in develop mode, at least for me.

As per my original post - this is still an ongoing issue for me - irrrespective of the module you are currrently in, it shouldn't be happening...

In a first step try to reset the preferences of Lightroom Classic:  How to reset Lightroom Classic preferences (adobe.com)

It's recommended to backup your preferences before you reset the preferences to the default settings:

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/preference-file-and-other-file-locations.html

If it doesn't help try is to switch off the GPU support from the Lightroom preferences and check if that helps to fix the issue.

Go to Lightroom > Preferences > Performance tab > Uncheck "Use Graphics Processor" > Restart Lightroom.

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html

If it's help see here Troubleshoot GPU issues | Lightroom Classic (adobe.com) and check the different steps.

If this also doesn't help I would try to create a new catalog and import one or two images. Then try to edit this in Photoshop and check it it's working.

@© Si I recently observed this behavior once. I resolved this with an right-click to the image and read the metadata from the file. But I can't reproduce it. It has never occurred before and has not occur again since this time.

If you've always problems I would try this:

Use the Adobe Creative Cloud Application to uninstall Photoshop. When asked, keep preferences! After this reinstall Photoshop again.

If this doesn't help the nest step is to reinstall both apps Lightroom and Photoshop. Please folloe the steps below:

  1. Open the Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop Client and uninstall both Photoshop and Lightroom Classic. When asked, keep preferences!
  2. Install Photoshop first and then Lightroom Classic. The right order is very important here!

If this doesn't help try the reinstallation with removing the preferences also.

Hi @© Si

I understand your frustration. When you use the "Edit in Photoshop" function, are you doing it from the album or from the synced collection?

Thanks!

Hi @Aleke
This randomly happens irrespective of its referenced place within the Lightroom catalogue UI.

I find this can happen with an image within a Folder, Collection/Synced & none synced or even a Publish Service collection.

When it happens I go back to the Lightroom Folder the image resides and view it within the Library & Develop module.

Often the Develop module will update correctly to show the new Photoshop edits, but viewed in either the Library grid (thumbnails) or Loupe view it will not have an updated image preview…

As I mentioned in my original post - I have many tedious workarounds to fix this.

Adobe have failed to address this issue in multiple LRC versions - It really is overdue.

Any software engineer looking into this issue @Aleke ?

You don't say how the images got to Photoshop and back. Are you using the proper procedure? It should be

  • in LrC, select Edit In... and then select Photoshop
  • make your edits in PS
  • Save (not Save As) the photo in PS
  • Return to LrC

Hi @dj_paige  - Yes, I confirm I use the correct procedure.
I use Lightroom Classic as my Catalouge Master - All editiing starts from images residing (referenced) within Lightroom.
