Question

Lightroom importing files to HD in stead of external hard disk

I'm going nuts. For some reason Lightroom has been saving files onto my HD in stead of an external disk. To my knowledge i have never changed this. Futhermore it keeps creating a custom folder name.

I found out by accident because I didn't understand what was eating my storage. After I found out I changed it back to my external disk (and copied all the files on my HD to this external drive).

To my big surprise I've found out now it had switched back to my hard disk again.

I found this out when my old computer died and suddenly a stack of raw files were missing (aparently this was congesting my back-up so much it resulted in missing files there as well).

What's happening?

PS I have another external drive with pro photos where I don't have this problem (thank god)…

As Johan says, you have to always check and be sure the destination drive and folder is correct. Sometimes Lightroom Classic defaults to the last drive used, but most of the time it doesn't. You are not alone in this situation, many of the photographers I have advised over the years have overlooked the destination drive/folder, too.

This is user error. You must select the destination folder in the right panel and you can also select there if Lightroom should create a subfolder and/or dated subfolders. So if Lightroom does something you did not expected, then you did not check those settings.
