Why has my mapping function in Version 5 ceased to work when I purchased the system outright

Map is no longer supported in your version of Lightroom. You can read details of what versions do / do not support maps at https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/map-view-no-longer-supported.html

In Lightroom make sure you are in the library module, then close Lightroom, And see if after you restart Lightroom the mapping comes back.

This is an oddity in the current LrC, might not be your issue.

How long ago did it work in your very old v5? Some items that Adobe pays other company's for were depreciated some time ago (years) in non subscription Lightroom. They pay Google for this one, so it may have been ended by Adobe.

Actually, I think the map issue for non subscription Lightroom goes back to 2018, when Adobe was discontinuing it for the old no longer supported Lightroom, v6 and older.:

Browse the WEB, perhaps bring up Google and search on the following:

Starting on November 30th, 2018, Map view will no longer be supported on this version of Lightroom

Some solutions might be found.
