Question

Lightroom pauses/hangs when moving between images in develop mode (12+ seconds) sometimes

  • Description of Issue

When moving between images, and sometimes when updating develop settings, the main window doesn't update sometimes, for periods of over 10 seconds.  The OS doesn't seem strained and there's no beach ball - it's as if the application hasn't woken up for some reason.

  • Lightroom Classic Version Number (Help>System Info…)

14.5.1  (this issue started - I believe., when moving from 14.4 to 14.5).

  • OS Version Number
    14.8 (23J21)
  • Camera Model (sometimes necessary)

Canon EOS R1, EOS R5

  • Step-by-step Reproduction Instructions (in precise terms, please)

Import images into lightroom, switch to develop, scroll thorugh images in filmstrip.

  • The Expected Result

images load quickly and consistently

  • The Actual Result

sometimes when selecting an image, Lightroom seems to have not figured this out for over 10 seconds at times.  System is not at high load (fans aren't spinning at full speed and CPU doesn't seem to be thermally throttling).

System specs: MacBook Pro 2019 16" i9/64GB/8TB/Radeon Pro 5600M 8GB.

Hey, @evilZardoz7639395. Welcome to the Lightroom Community. I'll need more info to help you figure this out. Please share the system info from Lightroom Classic from Help > System info > Copy and paste into a text document > Upload and attach here.

Does this happen with freshly imported images, or after you've applied specific edits to the image, such as Lens Corrections, Denoise, and Masks?

As primary steps, try this:

  • Unplug additional displays & use only one by default.
  • Monitor the Activity Monitor for any unexpected read-and-write operations.
  • Lightroom Classic > Catalog Settings > Metadata > Uncheck 'Automatically Write Changes Into XMP.'
  • Check this detailed response from our Expert: https://adobe.ly/4g6Cb4j

Let me know how it goes. Thanks!

Have you enabled the option Catalog Settings > Metadata > Automatically Write Changes Into XMP?  A severe performance bug introduced in LR 14.5 causes these symptoms:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-automatically-write-changes-to-xmp-can-t-be-used-with-denoise-on-large-numbers-of-photos/idi-p/15393188

The only workaround is to disable that option. I'm hoping that LR 15 fixes this -- it will likely be released within a couple days.
