Lightroom removed photos?

I am using Windows 10, Lightroom 5 but it has been updated. I have "lost" a number of photos but not all and there seems to be no pattern in Lightroom. They are all safe and sound on my hard drive. I have no idea what could have happened. I do backup regularly and synchronize regularly. I suspect there is a proper process for repopulating LR. I searched for an answer but also suspect I'm not asking the right question. Can you help me with this process, please? Many thanks!!

Menu item: Library->Show Photos in Subfolders. Make sure it has a check mark.

What was updated? Lightroom 5 hasn't been updated for a number of years.

Here's a screen print. For example, you see Diptera category with 0 photos yet one of the subcategories has 21 photos in it.

More details are needed. What do you mean "lost"? Describe in detail. Tell us exactly what you see that indicates something is "lost", or show us a screen capture.
