Lightroom sorting of images has changed unexpectedly?

A catalogue of 10,235 photos has changed the sort order. It is set to be sorted by file name (which was alphabetical) and has worked fine until today. Now, much in the catalogue is out of order thought it is still set for "file name" I've tried switching to a few others and then back but the problem remains. Since when does a name beginning with At come before As. It is also set for ascending. Would appreciate any help!

Thanks in advance-

Do you have any images in stacks? A stack is sorted by its first image, and the order of the other images inside a stack is random. That means that an expanded stack in between other images can show a very odd order.

Thank you again... no stacks, but the problem seems to have worked itself out. I deleted a single image that I had imported to the collection yesterday, and upon doing so the photos returned to alphabetical order by file name. Go figure-- makes no sense to me but I'm glad to be back to normal.

    Truly appreciative of your help!!!

Very odd behaviour is often caused by corrupt preferences. https://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/

I made a mistake in referring to my photos as a catalogue... it is actually a collection.
Thank you for your reply, but it did not work. Though I had never changed anything in preferences, I tried the reset in the link you provided and still have the same problem. Images that are supposed to be in alphabetical order (file name) do not appear in "alphabetical order". I made no changes whatsoever in Lightroom (Adobe Creative Cloud) to cause such a change.
