LIghtroom will not open

Question

I keep my lightroom files on a portable drive. I have a Windows PC, using Lightroom Classic V 10.3. I can open older versions of my catalog, plus I can create a new catalog, but it will not open my most current working catalog. The message states: Unexpected error opening catalog. The catalog could not be opened due to an unexpected error. I've tried creating a new catalog and importing from the one that won't open, but it give a similar error message. I've also tried opening as an Administrator. Somehow it's crupt. Is there a fix for it?

"Unexpected error opening catalog" usually implies you have to use a recent backup. Place the unzipped backup catalog file in a brand new empty folder and double-click on it to open it. If that doesn't work, place another unzipped backup copy of the catalog file (not the same one that didn't work in my previous sentence) on a different disk and double-click on it to open it.

This also usually implies a hard disk malfunction, perhaps a bad sector, and you ought to run diagnostics on you hard disk.
