Linked Smart Object (dng from LR Classic CC) Not Updating in Photoshop CC

HI All,

I'm opening a dng file in LR, clicking on Edit In > Open as SO in photoshop. Once in Photoshop, I click on Convert to a Linked SO and then on Replace with the same file name in the same original location of the dng file. With the files linked and both programs opened, I make changes in LR, but the PS file does not update!

I did observe, that the file name in PS has a "-1" after it. Even after I create the link and told PS to replace with the exact file name (without the -1 at the end), it's adding this "-1" to the file.

I have checked in LR, under Preferences > Metadata > Automatically write changes into XMP (I have tried with it checked and unchecked since I work with dng files and not sure writing to XMP was messing things up). I have also made sure that "Include Develop Settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF... is checked.

I have also checked that in LR Preferences > External Editing, I have PSD instead of TIFF.

In PS,in Preferences > General, I have checked Auto Update Open Documents.

I have an iMac (2017), Adobe Creative Cloud with both LR Classic CC and PS CC updated to the latest versions.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Are you absolutely sure that the Photoshop smart object is linked to the DNG that you are seeing in Lightroom? I ask because (a) that's what I usually get wrong and (b) the first step of Convert to Linked is to save a copy of the file - so you might have saved the DNG in addition to the one in Lightroom.

Select the LSO, then go to the Properties panel which shows the path. This may give you a clue.

You could also try "tickling" the DNG in LR - just apply an adjustment, let it save to file, then reset it.

Also, remember to run Metadata > Update Previews and Metadata. PS will display the DNG's embedded preview - just changing metadata isn't enough, the raw data needs rendering.
