lost Lightroom catalog that was synced, can I get the edits back?

hello everyone I'm in desperate need of help!!
My laptop was running slow so I decided a fresh install was in order, and I made a stupid fecking decision to reinstall the Mac OS without backing up my master Lightroom catalog which was synced.
It is completely my fault but my Ipad is still showing the catalog in the cloud and I can edit the smart previews etc etc but the master catalog is lost. along with my will to live.
Is there any way I can retrieve the catalog or somehow copy and paste all my edits out of the iPad as I can still see them?
I have all the photos backed up no problem but I really hope someone can help

(I tried some recovery software too, which found all the files, but once I downloaded and tried to open them they didn't appear so all the info behind the file was lost, waste of £60)
I hate myself right now

You can create a new catalog and then sync that. Lightroom Classic will then download everything that's in the cloud, including all the edits. When you synced the old catalog only smart previews were synced, so these smart previews will now be downloaded as new images. Smart previews are still a reasonable compromise however, and better than nothing. They are 2560 pixels on the longest side, so still a decent size. Didn't you use Apple Time Machine to make backups?

I noticed you said that your photos are backed up. In that case you may be able to synchronise the smart preview edits with these photos, if you import the photos into the new catalog too. There is a plugin that can synchronise edits between two images with the same name or capture time, but different extensions.

Johan, if the extensions have to be different to allow Syncomatic to work, that's a problem here. When smart previews are downloaded into the new catalog, the catalog retains the original file names. So importing the original files from the backup will result in same-named duplicates (one "missing" with a Smart Preview containing the edits, the other not missing but with no edits, and both having the same name, including extension). Do you know if Syncomatic works in that scenario?

If that doesn't work, an alternative approach could be to import the original files from their backup into the Lightroom desktop app, which should replace the cloud smart previews (suggest testing that on a small set of images first, checking in the Lightroom app that the file sync status has correctly been changed from Smart Preview to Original). Then when the new LrC catalog is created and synced, the originals will be downloaded, complete with the original edits. The obvious problem with that approach is that there would presumably be a need to temporarily purchase additional cloud storage space in order to facilitate the upload of all the originals from the backup (assuming only 20GB is currently available as part of the subscription plan). CARE: If planning on using this alternative plan, it's important to setup the download location (and dated folder structure) in LrC via the Preferences>Lightroom Sync tab....this must be done before enabling cloud syncing in the LrC catalog.
