I wanted to import files on my Desktop into Lightroom Classic. This worked perfectly for my photo files. However, the PDF and Doc files in the Desktop folder disappeared. Any idea where they went or how to recover them? Thanks.

If you're looking for an alternate way to organize and find files on your Mac desktop, the issue with Lightroom Classic is that it is designed to only import image files, and mostly from cameras.

Adobe Bridge can browse, filter, and find a much wider range of file types because it has to work with many more Creative Cloud apps such as Adobe Illustrator (vector graphics), Adobe InDesign (page layout), video, and yes, PDF. Although Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx) files are not by Adobe, Bridge does see those too. And Adobe Bridge has Collections and Smart Collections like Lightroom Classic does. So maybe Adobe Bridge is an option, because it’s already included with your Creative Cloud subscription.

If you’re interested in organizing with something like Smart Collections, you don’t need any software for that, because the macOS Finder lets you create Smart Folders which are pretty much the same thing (a dynamic list based on search criteria).

There are also other Mac applications that let you browse, catalog, and organize a wide range of file types similarly to Lightroom Classic and Bridge, such as NeoFinder (paid software).

I don't think LrC has done anything to your .doc or .pdf files, there are no functions in LrC to work with .doc or .pdf files; and so I don't think you can blame LrC for this.

Do a search (using Mac Finder, or for Windows users using WIndows Explorer) of all folders on all drives for one of these files. The other files are likely in the same location. Also look in the trash.

By any chance, are you using a plugin from @johnrellis (the name of which I can't remember) that allows you to "import" DOC and PDF and other files into the LrC database?

Putting files on the desktop for import into LrC is a relatively poor decision for many reasons, IMHO, and should be avoided.

Thanks for your help. We couldn't find the files in Trash. There weren't enough files to make it worth digging deeper. I'd love to convince my wife that putting files on the Desktop, but some things aren't going to happen.

One other thing to check: you may have more than one user account on your computer and the missing files are on the desktop for the other user?

You can't import PDF and DOC files into Lightroom.

What has you done on import. Please describe step-by-step.

Take a look in the trash. It's possible that you'll find it there.
