Lost photos after moving to an external drive

Question

I moved LrC files to an external drive and now i can't figure out how to find them in LrC. I followed a video instruction on proper way to do it but for some reason it didn't work for me.
Out of desperation I went to my TRASH and PUT BACK to my Imac and now I don't see a lot of the files in LrC.
Question?   How do I reemedy  this problem?
