LR 15.2 hangs in denoise after processing several images.

LR V15.2 hangs in denoise after several images were processed. That suggests a memory leak or a resource starvation, deadlock or any similar issue. LR hangs than, ignores the “cancel” button. When I click on the window [x] the window closes, but LR is still non responsive. When I try to terminate it, it hangs. Using Task Manager “kill process” stops LR finally.  

After a restart the previously hanging image processes fine and fast. 

I am using W11 Pro on a Dell Xeon workstation with 48G RAM and the LR and its cache are on a NVMe drive. 

When it works, the denoise (and also the AI object removal or marking) are wonderful and they clearly improve the quality of work on our photography.

    I selected 45 photos, all 46mp from my Nikon Z8,and batch applied Denoise. Completed without any problems.

    Usually the replies like “it works for me” are not very helpful, but in this case this might actually point to a problem, mentioned by someone else: My Nvidia P1000 (has 4 display ports) is already several years old. To me a blimp of time. But as I just verified, the card has 4GB VRAM, what is a bare minimum these days. Recommended it 8 or even 16GB VRAM. I am retired since last year, so I have to pace myself with expenses. Frankly, I was hoping that my hardware and I will both age and “depart” from here together… 😊But since I am using the 1440 monitors (they used to be called QHD, quad high definition) I probably need indeed to get myself a newer, bigger video card, to use efficiently these AI processes. Such is the fast pace of progress in hardware/software…

    In my times we took the backward compatibility in software more seriously. 

    Remember pilgrim : One day you will also get there too.

    There’s a update to Lightroom Classic 15.3 available. In this update several bugfixes included. Also the AI Denoise process is running now in the background.

    Try this update if it helps.

    You can also try to reset the Lightroom preferences to the default settings and see if it helps.

    My impression is that V15.3 got worse in this respect. I am checking again for the Nvidia drivers, maybe they need to be updated as well.

    Your graphics processor, Nvidia Quadro P1000 , is a 9-year-old GPU. Based on years of reports in the forums, it seems that Nvidia, Intel, AMD, and Apple put less priority on fixing bugs in drivers for older GPUs, especially bugs in the AI computations that have only started becoming widely used in apps in the last few years.

     

    We can’t tell if that’s the case here, but something to consider.

    It is even worse now. LR hangs FOREVER, not finishing the process at all. In some case it prints “An unexpected error occurred.”

    Are you for real? After so many years and years and years, you still cannot print the: “WHO” “WHY” in an error message? You are the self proclaimed world imaging company. Your boss goes to White House to lick ass of the insane Godfather, because he hopes for some handouts. Can you please, please, please print something like “Error in Module Denoise.java line 12345, process Denoising.exe because of <reason here.>” Is that really not obvious to you, that that is what allow to debug the reason??

    There is more “trouble in paradise.” When by some (unknown) issue a set of images is selected prior to Export, a control-something-export generates a flood conversions, which …. cannot be stopped. Even after a restart of Lightroom the same operation starts again, and I found no way to stop it. Best it to wait some 5-20min, and than delete the hundreds of unwanted exported jpeg images. 

    This is an example:

     

    Lightroom generated 15,000 jpeg images.

    1. Please do the LR menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste the entire contents here so we can see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running and important LR options that are set.

     

    2. When LR hangs, go to Task Manager.  Select Processes in the left column.  What is shown in the Memory column for Lightroom.exe?

     

    Then select Details in the left column. If the Commit Size column isn’t shown, right-click the top row, do Select Columns, and check Commit Size.  What is shown in the Commit Size column for Lightroom.exe?

     

    These two numbers will indicate if LR is hanging because of a memory leak.

    Looks like you have an old driver installed: 

    DirectX: NVIDIA Quadro P1000 (32.0.15.8195)

    From the nvidia website the latest driver for this is the RTX driver (they stopped using the quadro brand moniker a few years ago and the drivers for these cards are now in the RTX package apparently) and its code ends in 595.79 so likely a few years newer than what you have installed.

    An outdated GPU driver can very well explain what you’re experiencing. It is also a very old graphics card released in 2017 that might simply not support the current demands of the AI tools in Lightroom. It should fail more gracefully though.

    My estimate is, after 4-5 images, close the LR and restart in order to keep working. I am processing both CR3 Canon and NEF Nikon raw files. The cameras are a prosumer class, thus usually merely 24Mpixels, nothing really big.
