LR 6.12 freezes when I execute "Import"

A reinstall is very unlikely to help.

Plus, you will have a difficult time installing and patching that old version of LR again.

In the same direction as a reinstall, try resetting the preferences file.

Keep in mind this was a system working perfectly up to a few days ago.Updating the Nvidia card does not seem to address the problem. I do need to check that, however.

My files could be on an SD card or already loaded on my internal disc drive. But Lightroom never got to the point of asking. It froze immediately when I invoked the "Import" command. 

I can process images with files on the internal drive and already loaded into LR. No other disc drivee symptoms

I have the original LR 6 disc to re-install. 
I am having trouble finding the v6.14 update with that link you provided

HOWEVER, I do have a downloaded update in my archives,

The two applets are separate functions from LR. I don't know if they are available in 64b or not
I looked up Adobe Dynamic Link Manage 10.0 (as 10.0.0.0) and appears to be only 32b
