Question

LR 6.14 no longer responding

For some unknown reason Lightroom 6 froze on me while I was about to import some images from my camera and I had to end task (Windows 10 Pro)  to come out of it. Since then it will not open, hanging endlessly with the revolving blue arrow circle. I see in the catalogue manager that a lock file has been created. I delete the lock file (as advised on YouTube) but every time I try and re-open lightroom a new lock file is instantly created thus creating and endless circle of frustration.

I have tried to reset preferences by holding down ALT+Shift which gave me the option which I clicked. The screen opens only to the image with the forests, version, credits etc and that's it. It doesn't progress and there is no swirling blue circle. Nothing in the drop down menu is responsive either.

Can anyone help as I have not backed up my catalogue for some time ?

The first thing that you should try is to switch off the GPU support from the Lightroom preferences and check if that helps to fix the issue.

Go to Lightroom > Preferences > Performance tab > Uncheck "Use Graphics Processor" > Restart Lightroom.

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html

If Lightroom doesn't start correctly the please see "Solution 2" in the document behind the link below.

Troubleshoot GPU issues | Lightroom Classic (adobe.com)

Another step is to try to reset the Lightroom preferences.

https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/

It's recommended to backup your preferences before you reset the preferences to the default settings:

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/preference-file-and-other-file-locations.html

If this also did not help please rename folder in which your catalog file was saved. (for ex. in foldername.old)

Then start Lightroom and generate a new catalog file. It's possible that your recent catalog has a fault.

If this doesn't help we need more informations about your environment.

Please provide also a copy of your 'System Info'. This can be get from the LrC Help > System Info menu item.

There's a copy button in the System Info dialog. Press this button and paste the info into your next forum post.

Do you get an error message? If yes, please post the exact message or an screenshot.

This is a normal behavior. As soon as Lightroom starts a lock file was generated.

I can't get into preferences because LR will not open as it's unresponsive.

A few months ago I cloned my Windows drive to a spare backup. If I try and run LR.ex from that backup drive, it also will not open.

Open the Task manager, and make sure that Lightroom is not running in the background.

With the File explorer, go to C:\Users\[Your user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Preferences

Delete the file Lightroom 6 preferences. agprefs

Lightroom will create a new preferences file when it launches the next time.
