I stumbled upon the solution by chance: I recently reorganised the folder structure for my Lightroom photos, within Lightroom itself, of course. But the Book module didn’t ‘recognise’ this change. Manually selecting the folder brought the layouts back! Solved!

In the meantime, I found another forum post (from two years ago) that described my problem but didn't provide an answer:

My first thought is that somehow you have two different  catalogs, without realizing it, and so the Mac Mini finds one catalog while the MB Air finds the other catalog.

Please don’t simply say “No, that’s impossible” as people have had two catalogs in the past without realizing it. Please investigate and be sure that my explanation above is not really what is happening.

Thanks, the first idea: it’s impossible, because I use the only one catalog - file on the external drive. The catalog setting points to the correct folder on the external hard drive on both computers. But to be sure, I changed the name of the lrcat and the -data file and opened LRC on both computers with right - click. Now I’m completely confused - the books have also disappeared from the MBAir. A search using Spotlight turned up nothing; there is no other “hidden” lrcat file (only the catalog backups remain). Using an older catalog backup didn't work either. What I don't understand is this: the lrcat file shows the backup date, but the lrcat-data file always shows today's date. ???

By the way, the books had initially disappeared from the computer on which I had created them
