LR Classic CC working with Photoshop CC 2018

When taking a photo from LR to Photoshop CC 2018 to edit, I get the following error:

Could not apply the workspace because of a program error.

This is given to me when I try to select and mask a portion of a photo brought over by Lightroom classic CC.  Anyone else getting the same error?  I don't get the error when editing (select/mask) a photo directly in Photoshop CC 2018 without going through Lightroom

I have the exact same error message in PS 2018, wether I edit directly from Lightroom Classic or if I open a file within Photoshop CC 2018 and browse to a file that is in the Lightroom catalogue.

I do not get an error message if I upload a file that is not in the LR catalogue.

What puzzles me is that I was able to fix the error by resetting to default my Photoshop CC 2018 preferences. BUT, I was able to select and mask only ONE file form Lightroom Classic and then I got the error message for other LR files (BTW, I had just modified the default work space to add the histogram and some basic settings window (exposure, levels, curves...).
