LR classic dng —- link to nef ?

Hello, I have a folder in LR classicthey are in dng now I cannot find the original folder which I kept on my Mac when I downloaded and edited them - this happened in 2022 and today I need to see them but I dont remember on which extatnal hard drive I put them. But I have a duplicate of the folder but they have extension .nef!  Now to my issue - can I link a dng files to a nef files  the same original photo but different file name like 1088.dng and 1088.nef??? Or will that cause problem?? You could use the Syncomatic plugin. Import the NEFs so both sets of photos are in the catalogue, and the plugin can copy from the missing DNGs to the NEFs.
