Question

LR Classic not importing some photos on first pass

This is my issue: When I import images from memory card into LR Classic, sometimes not all photos are imported. At end of import a message states that some images could not be imported and it lists them. I eject card and reinsert then begin a second import of the same card. It recognizes the already imported images as duplicates and then it does import the images it did not bring over on the first pass, or at least some of them. Sometimes it takes several passes to get all the images.

Operating system and LR are up to date. Using Mac Studio but also recreated this using Macbook Pro.  I am an experienced LR user.

I read the forums here and noted some similar import issues relevant to duplicates, file number resets, etc. None of this is applicable in my case.

This does not happen on every import, only occasionally. Seems to be more prevalent with larger capacity cards, but as I say, it happens inconsistently, even with large cards.

Not the end of the world, but if there is a solution I'm missing or if it's a known issue I would be happy to know about that. Thanks in advance.

  • So from an SD card, hence you are selecting either Copy, or Copy as DNG, or Move (more on that)  but not Add.
  • You retry the import, and you see all the images, both those that got imported and those that did not, so you are not selecting Move. Good, do not move.
  • You eject the SD card, so the SD card was in a card reader, not the camera, A-ok

Inquiry

  • If you use the MACOS Finder, outside if LrC to copy the images from the SD card to the appropriate column, the appropriate folder, di you have any issues?
  • After that, if no issues, if you import those images into LrC selecting Add, any issues?

I did an import into a new empty catalog from a card of 35 images — 6 failed to import on the first pass. Those 6 did import on the second pass.

Then, in the finder, I copied the 35 files from the card to a folder on the desktop and created a new empty lr catalog and imported from the folder on the desktop to the new catalog. This produced the same results: 29 images imported on the first pass and the same 6 images were not imported.

So it appears that the card import is not the issue. Thanks for the troubleshooting suggestion, that helped narrow things down. But I'm still wondering about the problem of not importing a complete set of images on first pass.

The files are large DNGs taken with Leica M11 at full 60mp resolution - file size of images that came over on first pass were from 40-70mb.  The six files that did not come over were all 50mb or under so file size does not seem to be the issue. I've attached metadata from one of the files that was successfully imported on the first pass and one that was unsuccessful.

Personally, i NEVER use Lr for importing off a card for this exact reason. My suggestion is to use the Finder to ingest, then Import to Lr after.
