Question

LR develop module slow, locks up, freezes

I have created a brand new catalog for 2019 with only 200 photos in it. The catalog files are stored on my local computer (brand new 15" macbook pro, 2.9 GHz Intel Core i9, 32 GB 2400 MHz DDR4) and my photos and backups are stored on my business dropbox account. However, when I go to the develop module and use my presets, it basically locks up. LR is incredibly slow, sometimes freezes, and is essentially unusable. I'm noticing it more with some photos I imported from my iPhone (so they are .jpeg) but don't have enough photos to fully test the RAW format.

I see a lot of posts about LR being slow. Is there a major issue going on, or does LR have problems with JPEG files vs. RAW files? I'm really confused. I used LR for years (before 2018) and never had these problems.

I have the latest version, classic CC, all up to date.

And one thing about MAC OS I forgot:

In finder navigate to the "Adobe Ligtroom Classic CC.app" and select Get Info, you can check of a box to run in low resolution. See if that helps.

as your rig is a MAC Book, I overlooked one big issue, and that appears at the bottom of the first section of your system information. Lots of iMAC members have those nice 5K Retina displays, and Lightroom is struggling with those.

Displays 1) 6016x3384,

so a 5K display?

Is this an external monitor? And if so, can it be run at a lower resolution? An actual lower resolution, not a change in scale (although, you might give that a try anyhow). If not, then avoid using a full screen when running lightroom

Oh, and if that is an external monitor, and your actual laptop screen is not 4K, 5K, when you ren without the external monitor, how does Lightroom behave?

issue is size of previews that get created, now while the previews in Library mode, (and avoid monster resolutions their) can to some extent be controlled in preferences, those for Develop Mode are different.. So go smaller on the screen.

Sory, no links.

I had no idea about the monitor, so I will try to just run it on my laptop instead and see if that helps. Also, I noticed that "address lookup" was running when I click on the identity plate, so I paused that. I wonder if that could also slow things down. I do not sync, so that is off.

I will try it again this week on my laptop and without address lookup running and see if that makes a difference. Lastly, I also increased the cache to 20GB instead of 5GB.

I haven't looked at any of those links yet, but I'll see if the above 3 things improve performance and will report back. Thanks for the help.

Oh, and “I have the latest version” is a no starter. Too too many members have stated exactly that, only to find out they do not. Lesson learned.

please in LR click on Help, click on System Information, click on Copy. Paste that into a reply (from top down to just past plug-ins)

As a diagnostic step, try it without Dropbox

I had the same thought and moved all the photos to my local drive. Same results.
