LR missing folders

I have an iMac at home where I run LR classic and catalog and images are backed up to a 2TB Lacie external drive. I have an old Mac mini that I have hooked up at another place I spend a lot of time at. I brought the external drive with me this time but I cannot see folders or work I have done since 2016 which is about the time I got the iMac. Am I wrong assuming that the catalog/file info and images are on the external drive. LR seems to be reading something saved on or prior to 2016. How can I see my files on both computers as I move back and forth between locations.

catalog and images are backed up to a 2TB Lacie external drive.

Question-  The "backed up" catalogs- are they still in ZIP file format?

You need to have the most recent working catalog file .LRCAT either copied to the external drive using Mac Finder, or extract the most recent backup from the ZIP folder and 'open' this catalog on the Mac Mini.

It is possible that the <2016 catalog was the only available catalog on the external drive that the Mac Mini could see.

When using an external drive on two computers it should have the current working catalog and the photos, and Lightroom must always be directed to 'open' this catalog file on the external drive.
