Question

LrC 12.2.1 is slow or hangs for many seconds (windows)

Hi

I recently having a lot of trouble with my LRC 12.2.1. I tried the remove metrics.json steps (all of them) and it didn't help.

The problem I am having, is that lightroom hangs (PC showing: display not responding, loading, etc. ) and the display freeze for many seconds when I try to do an operation. This could be any operation like: open a menu, open fullscreen, switching to develop mode, grid mode, performing an develop operation etc. When Lightroom hangs, it usually uses more (or a lot) of CPU.

I recently updated my NVIDIA driver, so I rolled back to the previous version with no change in behaviour.

I am using smart previews as I am not at home where my NAS with the raw files are.

As for now lightroom is almost unusable for me as I never know when it hangs next.

"I tried the remove metrics.json steps (all of them) and it didn't help."

I don't know which steps you tried -- there are several gotchas in deleting "metrics.json" and most recommendations here don't include the complete list of steps.  Try again with these steps:

There's a new version, 531.41, of the NVidia graphic device driver available.

Please download and install the "Studio Driver" version and not the "Game Ready" version.

Then check.

You can also try to to reset the Lightroom preferences.

https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/

It's recommended to backup your preferences before you reset the preferences to the default settings:

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/preference-file-and-other-file-locations.html

If this all doesn't help I would suggest a complete and clean reinstallation.

Please follow the steps below:

if you're unable to install the cc desktop app at this stage, use an administrator account (solution 4 here,  https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/creative-cloud-missing-damaged.html)

My System: Intel i7-8700K - 64GB RAM - NVidia Geforce RTX 3060 - Windows 11 Pro 25H2 -- LR-Classic 15 - Photoshop 27 - Nik Collection 8 - PureRAW 5 - Topaz Photo

I did intall the new NVIDIA driver and reset preferences in Lightroom without any change.

However, as my catalog had references to a NAS disk that was not connected (at that time), I tried smething new.

I created a new empty catalog on my external SSD, and imported the images to this catalog. Lightrrom still freezed for a couple of minutes when I opened it, but after that I could work normally. Lightroom used some CPU when it freezed and it freezed each time I opend it , but not randomly now and then.

When I got home and reconnected to my NAS, everthing worked like a charm. Both when the NAS was included in the catalog and when my catalog (and images) was on an external SSD.

Any idea what the problem might be or what to fix it?

I am now back without connection to my NAS (and the new Lightroom version) and the problem is back. Lightrroom is still freeze occasionally. Then only way I could get it to work withoutg freezing, was to disconnect from any network. Anyone have an idea whart the cause of this problem is?
