LRC 14.4 Release and Smart Preview

Before the installation of LRC 14.4 Release and Camera Raw 17.4, I tweaked photos by using the Smart Preview version of the photos. It is because I experienced significant lagging if using the original versions of the photos, with longest side of 8,192 or 6,000.  Further, I sometimes take my laptop out for meeting clients.

As I have installed the said updates, LRC asked me to turn off editing by Smart Preview as the new AI process would be affected. I did so.  Then, I imported around 500 photos to LRC, and I experienced much lagging again.  When I applied a preset (without AI mask) across 10 photos, it took a few minutes to update the thumbnails.  (When I turned on Smart Preview, it was much smooth (but not rapid at all).)

Can you advise when should I use Smart Preview and when should not? (It takes quite some time to generate Smart Preview indeed).

@martin.1 Thanks for reaching out! To help us better understand and improve performance, could you please provide the following details:

  1. System Information: Go to Help → System Info and share the details.
  2. Workflow Details: Let us know where you're experiencing lag. For example, “I was in the Develop module and noticed delays when switching between images.”

Performance Suggestions:

  • Go to Edit → Preferences → Performance
  • Under Camera Raw Cache Settings, click Purge Cache
  • After purging the cache, restart your machine

Also, please ensure that you're using the latest graphics drivers—preferably the latest Studio drivers if you're using an NVIDIA GPU.

Let us know if you notice any improvements after these steps!

Thank you for your advice.  I just followed your suggestion, i.e. purged the cache memory and restart the machine.  (I have the latest version of NVIDIA driver installed).  After that, I processed 230 photos in a batch without lagging.  So, I would not take further action until I have some larger batches next week.

Have a nice week.  Thanks,
