LrC 14: Suggested face region names/texts have double edges/lines and color shifts

Previously I used LrC 12 (and other versions). Recently I installed LR 14.1.1 on a new system. Now the suggested names on recognized face regions look bad. I attached screenshots to show the issue, unfortunatly the screenshots do not show the whole extent of the problem; They look a little bit softer than the original LR interface on the monitor.

System Details:

  • Windows 10 22H2
  • nVidia GeForce RTX 4070 S
  • GPU driver version: 566.36 (studio driver)
  • DirectX 12
  • 24" LCD with 1920 x 1200 px resolution / 22" LCD with 1680 x 1050 px resolution (both 8bit, 60Hz)
  • Issue happens when Windows UI scaling is set to 100% (default) as well as when it is set to 110%.

Manually added person tag – a bit blurry but ok:

Suggested person tags – double letter edges or something, seemingly on some backgrounds more than on others (but sometimes more on dark and sometimes more on bright backgrounds), mostly on letters with straight lines:

after accepting a suggestion it looks a bit blurry but ok:

Suggested person tag – strange looking color/brightness shifts, seemingly on unsteady background:

Other texts within Lightroom with similar size look fine:

Just to bring this up again. In LR 15.0.1 it's still the same. 😞

Wondering, so few others are complaining. Maybe everyone else use 2K/4K displays instead of FHD already... 🤔 🤔

(For some reasons, Chrome always displays the screenshots kind of soft/blurred - no matter if uploaded here or at image hosters. But if you download them and open them in local image viewers, then it looks like LrC on my PC.)

Here are a couple of troubleshooting steps that sometimes fix problems when nothing else does:

1. Do a clean uninstall/reinstall of all installed Creative Cloud apps using the Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner tool:

https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/apps/troubleshoot/diagnostics-repair-tools/run-creative-cloud-cleaner-tool.html

2. If that doesn't help, try making a new user account and logging in to that. Lightroom and its components scatter all sorts of information in hidden user-account folders, and logging in as a new user is a quick way to test if it's gotten corrupted and causing the problem.

- On Mac, go to System Settings > Users & Groups.

- On Windows, see here for how to add a new Windows user accout:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/manage-user-accounts-in-windows-104dc19f-6430-4b49-6a2b-e4dbd1dcdf32

When you get to the dialog "How will this person sign in?", click "I don't have this person's sign-in information" to create a local account, not a "Microsoft" account.

Then log out and login to that new account. Create a test catalog with a few photos and see if the problem still occurs.

For several versions of Lightroom Classic, I have had two issues show up with the name box that appears with face detection or when you draw a region for a face that was not detected. The first issue is that the suggested name font appears to be transparent text in a grey box, which allows the underlying image to shine through where the letters are, making the name hard to read (looks fuzzy). When a name has been selected, then the font turns to white, which makes it easy to read. The second issue is when drawing a new region to identify a face not detected, the name box comes up with a "?" , but the active name box jumps to the previous name box in the image with the name selected, so if you started to type the name for the person in the new name box, it would be changing the previously selected name box (focus changes incorrectly). Many versions ago neither of these problems existed. I have been quietly waiting for the problem to be fixed, but it has not, so I am finally reporting it. Currently running 14.3.1 on Windows.

Example 1 shows the transparent font. Example 2 shows the white font. Example 3 shows the "?" entered for the region I added but does not show that the other namebox was selected (text highlighted) as I could not screen capture that state.

Have you tried resettting the LrC preference file as doing so often fixes odd behaviour. The procedure is described in Method 1 in this linked Adobe Help document https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/help/reset-preferences.html

The issue is still there after the latest LRc update to 12.2. (Also one or two minor Windows update were installed in the meantime.) It might got a bit better with 12.2. 🤔 🤔 But I'm not sure as the intensity depends on the images.

At least it is still not good when the text is really bright.

And the font transparancy looks still reeeeally strange. It's harder to read as it sometimes looks speckled.

Quickly rule out problems with the GPU by temporarily setting Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor to Off.

Tried that. Also restarted LR after that. Didn't change anything in regard to this issue.

Looks like a font rendering issue instead of a GPU problem to me. Don't have a windows machine so can't reproduce but doesn't happen on my Mac.

Yes I belive so too.

When I upscale the screenshot (4x, no softening) it obviously might look a little blocky but some issues with font rendering really pop out.

- artifacts at the lower case e

- upper case S also looks strange (the upper left outer curve is almost a corner)

- to little / no space between o and n, or between i and e

- to little / negative space between f and r

The suggested name font is rendered too bold or something like that. And also with this weired kind of transparency (where the brightness of the text seem to be a bit dependend on the image under it even though the dark gray box having a uniform, 100% opaque color).

It might be Windows specific. Windows has this ClearType setting to finetune font rendering. But changes at it seem to leave this texts/issue unaffected.

Googling for that GPU driver number gives some forum messages about problems. Check for an update.

Just updated to 572.16. Issue stays the same.

I don't assume this is a strictly GPU related issue.
