LrC comments not available in Private vs. Public Collection

Not sure if I'm missing something, but I've shared a collection by invite only, so my clients could comment/pick selects. These comments show up in LrC, but if I want to make an additional comment directly to the photo in LrC, it says I need to "Make collection public to add comments." I can add a comment to the photo in the private collection on the web, so I'm confused as to why I can't add it directly in LrC? Would I need to make the collection public, add my comments, then turn it back to private? That seems kinda wonky to have to do that, I must be doing something wrong.
