LrC Edit in PS return to LrC Save vs Save as as of 22 August 2024

I may remember this incorrectly. Or something changed.

As I remember it, when you choose to Edit in Photoshop (from LrC), upon finishing your edits in PS, if you choose "Save As" instead of "Save", the finished photo would not import into the LrC catalog automatically.

To Clarify, two workflows as I remember in the past:

  1. In LrC select a photo
  2. Select Edit In PS
  3. Accomplish the edits
  4. In PS select "Save"
  5. In LrC, the new image appears in the catalog

or

  1. In LrC select a photo
  2. Select Edit In PS
  3. Accomplish the edits
  4. In PS select "Save As"
  5. In LrC, the new image does not appears in the catalog, you would need to SYNC.

So, am I remembering urban folklore, or has something changed

Oh, and:

  • LrC v13.5
  • PS 25.11.0
  • WIN 11
  • Files tested are Fuji RAF.
  • PS save as TIFF
  • Catalog and photos on local hard drives, OneDrive not used, Cloud not used. NAS not used. No known buggy plug-ins
  • Recently reset the LrC preferences file as a test. (Have not reset PS preferences file)
  • LrC /Help/System Info/ attached

You are remembering this correctly, and things did indeed change. In the past, if you used 'Save as' and saved the image in a different location with a different name, then Lightroom would not add it to the catalog. This changed a few years ago however. All of a sudden, an image 'Saved as' with a different name and in a different location did add that image to the catalog. I have no idea if this was 'as designed', or also a surprise for Adobe...

I believe that this is still the current situation, but there is more. Please note that Photoshop also has a 'Save a copy' menu, which is not the same as the 'Save as' menu. As the name of this menu suggests, 'Save a copy' saves a copy of the image, meaning that the image that is open in Photoshop is considered as still not saved. Almost certainly that will also mean that 'Save a copy' will produce an image that is not added to the catalog.

There isn't enough specificity to answer the question.

Step 1: Behavior can vary depending upon raw / non-raw
Step 2: If Step 1 is non-raw, there are three options for sending it to PS.
This can affect the outcome of your realized Step 5.

Additionally, Step 4, where 'Save As' saves to the same location and file name vs different location and unique filename.

Ok, some clarity

  • Original file is a RAW, from a Fuji Film X-T5, so a RAF file. In this case "_DSF0136.RAF"
  • When selecting SAVE AS in PS, I accepted the same file name (except of course the added EDIT and the file type  .TIF) and to same folder as the original. In this case _DSF0136-Edit.tif
