Question

LrC is missing the Filename Editor

I only recently discovered the LrC ability to edit filenames during import.  However, LrC has no Filename Text Editor in the right pane of the import window. The two panes available are File Handling and Apply During Import.

Adobe Help keeps referring to “Restoring Filename Editor in Adobe Learning Manager Desktop Application” but I have never used Adobe Learning Manager!

I’m a newbie to LrC. Maybe I have missed something, or my search input is misworded but is there a human out there who knows how to solve this dilemma? I really could use this feature in  LrC.

Thanks.

I shall give that a try.  However, I need to do find and replace in most of the filenames so I might have to use the tried-and-true PowerRename.

Thank you for the procedure, it may be of use later on and faster.

To add to misterbeen’s answer, when you have the Add option selected, it seems like the philosophy for Add is “import as is,” as in “don’t change anything file-system-related” such as folder organization, folder names, and file names.

If you do want to rename files you’re importing with Add, after the Add import finishes, stay in the Previous Import collection, Select All, and choose the command Library > Rename Photos.

Thanks.  It seems like a long process; maybe, just rename everything before adding or importing with PowerRename and be done with it.

It depends on what you need. For example if in Lightroom Classic you already set up the file renaming template you frequently use, then after the import all you need to do is Select All, press F2 (the shortcut for Rename Photos), and apply the rename template. That doesn’t need to take more than a couple seconds to do.

However, if you need to do something that Rename Photos in Lightroom Classic can’t do, such as string substitution (Find/Change), then you do want to rename the photos using other software before importing.

The Filename Renaming panel only appears during import when you're using the Copy or Move option. If you're importing with Add, Lightroom Classic keeps the files in place and hides the filename renaming controls. Try switching the import method to Copy and see if the File Renaming panel appears on the right side.

Thank you for the quick reply and the clarification. I misread the help article which reads in part

“To access the Filename Template Editor in Lightroom Classic (LRC), follow these steps:

    1. Open Lightroom Classic.
    2. You can open the Filename Template Editor from several places:
      1. In the File Renaming panel on the right side of the import window, choose Edit from the Template menu when importing photos by copying or moving files. . .”

The last bit I didn’t read.  My mistake.
