Question

LrC not opening - preview cache path warning

I am trying to open my lightroom classic. And I get a message that there was an error and cannot open. The warning message tells me that the preview cache paths would exceed the maximum path length for my platfom. I'm clueless. What do I do to fix this?

So that would be

That right there is something like 130 characters (including spaces and backslash(s) but ignoring the H

 

And is this where you keep your backups?

 

On the drive of your choosing create a new folder, perhaps call it Lightroom. And copy that catalog to it. And rename that catalog Lightroom-v13-3. Then if you still had that on H drive you would have

H:\Lightroom\Lightroom-v13-3.lrcat, only 31 characters (ignoring H)

 

Also, returning to that inquiry about backups. DO NOT KEEP BACKUPS ON THE SAME HARD DRIVE AS THE WORKING  COPY.

What hard drives do you have? I think the following should be stated

 

  • The Lightroom Classic catalog can take advantage of being on your fastest hard drive
  • The Lightroom Classic catalog must not be on any form of network share, not a server, not a NAS, not a Cloud (not in your case)
  • The Lightroom Classic catalog should not be automatically synced to the cloud, such as OneDrive. Performance will take a hit (not in your case)
  • The Lightroom Classic Library Previews must be on the same hard drive, in the same parent folder as the catalog
  • The Camera RAW CACHE can take advantage of being on your fastest hard drive
  • The Camera RAW CACHE does not need to be on the same hard drive as the catalog
  • On Windows computers, it is recommended to not place the CAMERA RAW CACHE on the same hard drive as the Windows paging file as they will compete for read/wrights, but this is a small performance benefit/cost ratio
  • The photos do not see an advantage of being on the fastest hard drive.
  • The photos do not need to be in the same hard drive as the catalog
  • While Adobe apparently supports the photos being stored on a server, be it an actual server, a NAS, or the Cloud. Do not do that, performance can take a hit, and eventually the catalog appears to loose the connection.
  • Backups should be to separate media. If your catalog and the backup of your catalog is on the same hard drive, then you loose both when that hard drive fails.
  • Server shares such as actual Servers, NAS or the Cloud are a great place for backups
  • Think 3-2-1 for backups
  • The backup in LrC does not back many things up. See second link below

    With the catalog file name getting long, the preview file names get even longer, and this can get to the point where Windows OS file name limitations pop up. (this involves the entire path name, not just the file name)

    'Does not need to contain the history of previous upgrades, v1-, v11, v12, etc. Simplify it
