Question

LrC performance in downloading new images from creative cloud

Hi,

I have a performance issue.  My workflow is that I add new images to LR via my iPad LR.  It uploads the images to the creative cloud just fine.  When back to my desktop, I open my (Win 11) LR classic, and it starts downloading images from creative cloud to my main catalog.  The issue is, this downloading now appears "throttled" to only 5 images every 30 seconds.  For 1000 images that's about 1h 40 minutes.  It used to be faster, mainly limited by actual network bandwith capacity.

Thoughts on my current setup:

  • my network connection is a 1 Gb connection, and every other program I use gets to benefit from its full speed, no problem.  And even LR downloads those 5 images like in one second as a burst.  Then it just waits, no network traffic (from LR anyway) until the 30 secs fill up and it downloads the next batch.  I have observed this visually with windows task manager showing network traffic.
  • My disks are SSD, many Gbs per second, to my eye they don't appear as the bottleneck either.  My catalog has some 200 000 + images at the moment, of which some 40 000 are also on creative cloud.
  • Now running the latest LrC version 14.5.1. I don't update always to the latest version immediately, but this issue has been for more than one version.
  • I noticed this issue first time around summer 2025.  Didn't have it before.
  • Windows 11 Pro version 24H2, current OS build 26100.6584. (should be up-to-date most of the time)

Any ideas what might be causing this, how I could investigate deeper, what info to provide you guys etc...?

I posted this now here to discussion, as not (yet) sure if this is actually a bug.

Any help much appreciated,

Regards, dkkrp

Hi @dkkrp,

Thank you so much for taking the time to describe your setup and provide detailed observations. That said, the pattern you’re seeing (roughly 5 images every ~ 30 seconds) does sound slower than expected for your hardware and connection. Please update to Lightroom Classic 15.0 (released recently) and see how it goes. Confirm whether your Lightroom Classic catalog is stored on internal SSDs (not external/ network drives) and that no antivirus or backup software is scanning your catalog or photo directories while Lightroom is running.

Internally, I’ve already confirmed with the Cloud Services team that there’s no intentional throttling on the server side, where originals are stored. Therefore, this issue likely stems from client-level sync pacing or catalog state management.

Thank you very much, I will definitely check these out!  I can quickly comment that the LR catalog is on local SSD on drive D (nothing over network etc), and it is a separate SSD from drive C.  Drive C has Microsoft Onedrive sync active for my user account, has been for ages.  I also have F-Secure virus etc protection.  I now tried to make F-Secure skip lightroom catalog folders and my cloud image download folders.  Did not notice any immediate effect, but I want to test out a bit more before I can be sure.  And I'll have the LR update to version to do yet.  I'll come back after a bit.
