LrC Problem When Using Masks in ACR and Smart Objects

There has been some discussion about the problem LrC has with ACR masks.  See my comment in this discussion: https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/lightroom-has-encountered-problems-reading-this-photo-since-upgrade-to-lightroom-14-0-1/m-p/14943179

That problem is not easy to reliably reproduce, but when making extensive use of masks, at some point LrC reports there has been an error and the file can no longer be edited.  At that point you were toast and all your work was lost.  There seems to have some improvement in v15.1 since when the error occurs now after shutting down and restarting it is sometimes possible to continue editing and exporting the file.  But the performance is erratic.  Most of the time with light use of masks no error occurs.

In order to try to avoid this error I have started Using LrC to open files as smart objects in Photoshop26, and then do the ACR edits in PS.  The smart objects seem to work as expected, I can see all the edits back in LrC after the file has been saved, and I have not seen any repeat of the error reports that I have seen in LrC.  It is difficult to reach any conclusions since the behaviour was so difficult to reliably reproduce, but it seems the error is may not be in ACR, but is in LrC.  That means the method of using Smart Objects to move to PS to make extensive use of masks may work.

Unfortunately, another problem has emerged.  For some reason after extensive editing using smart objects, the edits stop appearing back in LrC when the file is saved in PS.  It's bizarre.  Everything is working as expected but something triggers a change.  All the edits show in the appearance of the saved file, but the edits are not shown in the develop module.  Back in PS, when double clicking the smart object, ACR opens as expected and all the edits, including masks, are shown.  In LrC the edits, including the edits using masks and removals using AI tools, are present in the displayed file but not shown in the edits.  Even more strange, if I click the Reset button, all the edits are removed and the file returns to its unedited RAW state.  Bizzare!!

Unfortunately there seem to be some errors in the LrC/ACR/PS that make it problematic to make extensive use of masking and other ACR editing.  I have seen little information that indicates Adobe is aware there is an issue.  Most users will never seen this problem since very few users stress the editing with extensive masking.  It would be nice if there was a work around since I doubt Adobe will acknowledge the issue or do anything to correct it.  It is very risky to do extensive edits since at any point all your work can be lost.

I have tried all the usual methods to correct errors (reset preferences, restart, reload).  Does anyone know a way to avoid this?

I am sorry, but your workflow LrC -> Edit in Ps as Smart Object -> Edit Smart Object with ACR -> Save to LrC and then expecting ACR edits to show in the LrC Develop's panels makes no sense to me.

Have I got it wrong?

Can you please explain this in more detail?

The sequence you describe is correct but your conclusion that it makes no sense is incorrect.  That is the way an opened smart object is supposed to work.

Thanks for the link, but I don't need a tutorial on using Smart Objects in Ps.

Ctrl-s doesn't help.

You are posting here because you believe there is a problem that needs fixing, but without a detailed step by step description of what you are doing, how can anyone else attempt to replicate your issue?

Opening a RAW photo from LrC using Edit In > Open as a Smart Object in Photoshop..., editing in ACR and then expect those edits to magically appear back in LrC just won't happen. To get ACR edits returned to LrC, the Smart Object has to be Linked. If that is what you are doing, you haven't mentioned it.
