LRC updated to 12.1 and now catalog has many missing files

My LRC was updated today to 12.1 and then it updated the catalog file from Catalog vx to Catalog vx-1. When LRC opens the new catalog 90% of files are missing. If I try to force LRC to open the original catalog it hangs.  What can I do?

I was on 12.01. I have done as you suggest but it still hangs on Opening Catalog: Lightroom Catalog-vx.lrcat

Search the LrC forum for "Lightroom Classic Hangs on Opening". There may be previous threads that can help. I have personally never had to deal with that issue.

Be sure the catalog(s) is backed up. Two things you can try is to roll back to V 12.0.1. You can do that in the Adobe Creative Cloud app. Also in the CC app, you can uninstall and reinstall LrC.

I would also reset LrC preferences. Lightroom Classic preferences do not get reset with a re-install. You have to do that separately.

Updated from which version? The update from 12.0.1 to 12.1 does not upgrade the catalog. If it seemed it did, then most likely it upgraded an old copy. That would explain the missing files as well.

That makes sense. It definitely did update the catalog and it is possible I
didn't spot there was an incorrect catalog listed in the update dialog.

So where do I go from here? At the moment I can't start LRC it just hangs,
although I can see in task manager it is still active doing something.

Thanks

Kill it in task manager. Then, look in the folder where the catalog is for a file that ends in .lock. Delete that .lock file ONLY.

Did you upgrade from LrC V11.x? or were you already using V 12.x?

While you are in the folder look for the largest .lrcat file and double click on that to restart the program and catalog upgrade process.

When you say "missing" do you mean that the catalog it's self does not contain the images or that the catalog has the images, but they are showing as missing in the Library or Develop module?

If the catalog it's self only has about 10% of the images of the previous catalog, I suggest moving the new -1 .lrcat file to another folder and doing the conversion again.

Also, be sure that you are converting the actual catalog that has all your images. That would typically be the one with the latest date and the largest file size.
