LRClassic Issue - Photo Order Changes When Drag-Drop From Collection To Collection

Mac - Lightroom Classic - All Current

----------------------

Collection Set

  • Folder 1 holds 100 photos.  Sort:  Custom Order
  • Create Folder 2.  Drag-drop 100 photos from Folder 1.  Order changes
  • Delete Folder 2
  • Create Folder 3.  Change Sort to Custom Order
  • Drag 100 photos from Folder 1 into Folder 3.  Order changes
  • Set Folder 1 as Target Folder.  Repeat steps.  Order changes

How can I move 100 photos in a custom order to another folder without the order changing?

Thanks.

I think I understand your question and had an answer (long time ago) that might be what you ask. At the time the question related to creating a wedding album with separate collections of events at the wedding sorted.

1) Sort each Collection of the series in the Custom order you want for each.

2) Create a new "Empty" Collection (without any images) also set the "empty" collection to the TARGET COLLECTION

3) Immediately set this empty Collection to "Custom Sort"  (sounds silly, but regardless of there are no images, and you must click on the Sort order option menu. )

4) Now select all images [Command+A Ctrl+A] in Collection '1' and drag and drop all into the "Empty" Collection. Make sure you drag using the FIRST photo in the Collection.

Or- Instead of Drag&Drop, you can select the FIRST photo in each collection, do [Command+A Ctrl+A] to select them all and hit [B] to place them in the "empty" collection.

5) Repeat step 4) for each remaining Collections 2, 3, 4, etc, in turn by number order.

The result is that the "Empty" collection will now have all your images sorted as you want-

Collection "1" sorted, Collection "2" sorted, Collection "3" sorted, Collection "4" sorted, etc.

(Do not try to reset the Sort option)

6) If you want derivative images with a sequence maintaining the sort: Export the "Empty" Collection using your Sequence Rename Preset- (eg. "Sequence_Filename").

I knew there was something I was forgetting:

“Make sure you drag using the FIRST photo in the Collection.

Or- Instead of Drag&Drop, you can select the FIRST photo in each collection..”

I was just grabbing all the selected photos from any photo, not the first one in the set.  The photo I highlighted with or dragged with became the first photo!  Then, the Custom Sort worked (no Target necessary).

I’ll be back in a few years when I forget how to do it again : )

Thanks Rob.

I think this has always been that way and cannot be changed. The reason probably is that Lightroom does not know where in the order you want to add those new images, so you’ll have to update the sort order anyway.

Hi Johan,

Thanks for your reply.  I encounter this situation every couple of years and figure out a solution or find one online.  This time, however, whatever I am trying isn’t working.

Maybe I am not remembering the correct solution, but I’ve been able to solve it before.  Maybe the software has changed?  : )

Thanks for thinking this through with me.  I appreciate your help.
