M1 Mac spinning beach balls, but only in masking panel

I’m getting spinning beach balls every 5-15 minutes when working with masks. Usually I have to force quit LR after several minutes of spinning.

It happens during a variety of activities, but only in upper part of the masking panel. (Toggling a mask view, clicking to add a brush, clicking the add and subtract buttons) I’m not aware of it happening when making adjustments in the lower part of the mask panel (exposure, shadows, effects, etc.)

  • 16GB memory
  • LR catalog in Mac's onboard memory
  • Images on 2TB Samsung SSD (50% free)
  • LR graphics processor set to Auto
  • LR cache 10GB

If the reset of the preferences solves the issue you shouldn't restore the old values from the backup.

There is a risk that the error will occur again.

You should set the corresponding values again yourself.

Thanks. I made screenshots of all the settings, then reset. Over the next few days, I'll work in the masking panel to see if it helped.

In a first step try is to reset the preferences to the default settings.

  • Reset Procedure:
  • Close Lightroom.
  • Windows: Hold down [Alt]+[Shift] while restarting Lightroom.
Mac: Hold down [Opt]+[Shift] while restarting Lightroom.
  • Overwrite the Preferences when prompted by the dialog.
  • Close Lightroom.
  • Restart Lightroom.

It's recommended to backup your preferences before you reset the preferences to the default settings:

If this doesn't help you should try is to switch off the GPU support from the Lightroom preferences and check if that helps to fix the issue.

Go to Lightroom > Preferences > Performance tab > Uncheck "Use Graphics Processor" > Restart Lightroom.

Thanks for the quick response!

After resetting preferences, should I restore them from the backup do you suggest I make?

Or are you suggesting I leave them at the defaults? (probably not, otherwise why would I make a back up?)

In other words, am I resetting the preferences to repair any corruption, and can then go about setting them as I wish?

Thanks,
Russell
