Question

Mac user SCARED to do any software updates... HELP!!!

I'm a pro photographer that uses Adobe for all my editing needs (Photoshop, LightRoom Classic, etc...).  I've not updated my computer software for years because I'm afraid my Adobe products will stop functioning because they've not caught up to the newest Software update from Apple.   I'm still on Catalina 10.15.7 and thinking about updating to Ventura.  Is there anyone else out there that feels like I do about this and just doesn't do the software updates?  I cannot afford any downtime because I've got clients waiting on photos and it seems I'm always in this state so there is never a good time "experiment" with new software updates and a possible Adobe breakdown.   Any thoughts from anyone else experiencing this would be helpful.  Incidently, I've always called adobe before doing updates in the past and their answer is always the same: "you'd better wait awhile longer until we get things compatible with the new Mac software".   I've been told this so many times that I just stop updating my Mac for fear of my Adobe products not working.

I'm kind of like you, I tend to wait at least six months before installing a major upgrade to macOS. I’m actually a little late right now, my Mac is still on macOS 12 Monterey because I didn’t want to upgrade in the middle of big projects.

If you aren’t comfortable upgrading all the way to macOS 13 Ventura or macOS 13 Sonoma, macOS 12 Monterey has been rock solid for me for many months.

macOS 13 Ventura should be well settled by now, over one year since its release, so I will upgrade to that soon. For Lightroom Classic, some of the remaining problems with that and Sonoma seem to be with macOS print presets.

Some of this also has to do with any non-Adobe accessories you might use. Apparently Epson has not quite gotten their printer drivers up to date for macOS 14, and only recently has the macOS driver for my Wacom tablet settled down.

Conrad C -

Good info.  It's been so long since I've updated that I don't even know the order in which Apple released these things.  I'll have to look that up.  Seems like from all the comments, Ventura seems to work ok and that's what it's wanting me to update to at this point.  As soon as I finish my current projects and get into my post-holiday lull, I'll bite my nails and hit the upgrade button.  Thanks for the reply.

I'm a working pro myself (and formar Mac Genius, if that helps) and beyond maybe waiting a few days for any showstopper bugs to appear, I typically update without worries. Millions of people use Adobe apps on Mac, if there is a problem it will be apparent pretty quickly.

Make sure you have good backups (either Time Machine or a third-party backup app) but otherwise you should be fine.

You make a good point.  It always seems like I'm the one in the million guy that any 'bugs' latch onto.  Appreciate the info!

The first thing to check is to see if your Mac can run macOS Ventura or macOS Sonoma.  If they can, and you've got the Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan (NOT Lightroom 6 or PS CS6), there sholdn't be any sort of confilct.  If there is, you should be able to roll back.

JMHO - if you're still running an Intel-based Mac, start thinking about upgrading to a M3 or M2 Mac.

Hi Charles -  Thanks for the info.  I've seen "roll back" on this thread and several others and I just want to clarify.  By 'rolling back' you mean going back to the operating system you were using before doing the new update?  I didn't even know that was possible.  I'll do some research on this end and see if I can figure our how to do this but if you have a link handy, please let me know.  If not, no worries.  Thanks for the reply.

Have you considered a separate computer for non work. Use it to test before implementing on the work/business computer.

Yes... absolutely.  My current iMac is getting close to the end of its life and when it goes, I'll try what you suggest.  I was interested to see how others navigate this issue but with the lack of replies, I guess I'm in the minority of folks that are having problems with this.  Seems like there should be a better way that doing Mac software updates and then holding your breath to see if your Adobe products will work or not.  Anyway... thanks for the reply and suggestion.

The latest version of LrC is version 13.0.1 so there has been only the .0.1 update bug fix which was released on Oct 16th 2023.

Update cycle for LrC is usually every two months is one is likely in the next 2 to 3 weeks.

From my experience over the last couple of years I would recommend checking when the upcoming version 13.1 is available.

See the attached from LightroomQueen website.
