Masking slow - overlay takes 1 minute to display

While my system is older (2017), the masking feature in the latest version of lightroom is almost unusable. I am working on DNG's that are 16 bit (HDR) files and it exhibits the following problematic issues: 
1. Red overlay when selecting an already created mask takes over 1 minute to display
2. Updating the mask is slow, particularly when using the brush tool where the wheel starts spinning sometimes even after momentarily starting to paint the mask. Often only a small area of what was painted updates
3. The effects take several seconds to manifest themselves.
4. Selecting a mask can be difficult due to the slowness of the machine to react so I sometimes end up selecting subject when I want to select sky.

Five year old GPU, and 5K screen. That is the first thing I see that could be related to your issue. Is the GPU turned on in LrC (Preferences->Performance->Use Graphics Processor)?

 

I see that recommending gaming use for this GPU stops at 2560x1440. I don't know how that relates to LrC performance, but I wouldn't be surprised if your GPU is the problem.

Never clear to me exactly what those two lines tell me.That is, exactly what is setup in preferences for Camera RAW?

So, how much have you alloted?

In Preferences, what is shown for use of the GPU? A screenshot may be helpful. Huge resolution on a old GPU. Are you getting full acceleration?

Also, how much VRAM?

More of an observation than a solution, and probably not a performance problem at all. But the older plugins, ON1 2021 vs 2022, any teadon to keep the old ones?

 

And a question, in your external editor preferences, for that ON1 Resize 2022, does that point to a standalone Resize, or something in ON1 PhotoRAW 2022? Using a preset to edit in ON1 PhotoRAW 2022, then trying to select Resize, is not working for me.

I would comment that your catalog full path  name is getting a bit long, but MACOS not Windows. If Windows, it would be a good idea to rename, using something shorter, like Davids Lightroom Catalog V11. On a Windows computer, every character from that U in users  (or is the first / included?) to the t in catalog would add up, and when you approach 254 characters, boom, no access. Oh, and that goes for the other files along with the catalog, some that add additional characters. This may actuall go south in LrC on a Windows computer a few characters before the limit. This has nothing to do with performance.

I'm having similar issues but on a newer Mac system. M1 Mac Mini, 16GB ram. Two weeks ago I was masking images just fine with little to no delay. Then Sunday evening I went back to this project and noticed now that masking is lagged a lot. I go to make changes to a mask then I have to wait a few seconds to see if it applied or not, try again wait again. It takes 3-10'sh seconds for it to catch up.  I updated to the latest version of LRC and Camera Raw but it still does it. Maybe the change history on this image has gotten too long? I'm not sure. Not sure what happened, but it's made editing super annoying and time-consuming.
