Question

“Metadata Was Changed Externally” on all imported photos since Lightroom Classic 8.3

Since I upgraded to version 8.3, Lightroom Classic shows the “Metadata Was Changed Externally” icon in the Grid view of the Library module on all imported photos, even though no external applications made changes to these photos. Version 8.2, on the contrary, behaves as expected. I have already tried uninstalling all versions, removing app preferences, and reinstalling version 8.3, but it does not help. I use macOS 10.14.5. Please could you investigate the issue?

Same with me.

It IS a software bug --> Adobe, please correct.

Please could you investigate the issue?

We are other 'community' users of Lightroom, so can only offer advice from our knowledge.

Version 8.2, on the contrary, behaves as expected.

And are you opening the same Catalog in both Lightroom versions?

Do you regularly save metadata to files either by [Ctrl+S] or in Preferences?

I would not expect that different Lr versions would show differently if you are opening the same catalog file.

Different Catalogs (A & B) may show "metadata changed" if, for example, you saved metadata to files in Catalog-A and then opened Catalog-B.

No, I have tested with two separate pristine Lightroom Classic installations and catalogs.

Here are the steps to reproduce the issue:

  1. Install Lightroom Classic 8.3 on macOS 10.14.5
  2. Create a catalog
  3. Import a photo
  4. The photo will have the “Metadata Was Changed Externally” icon

Here are the steps to restore the expected behavior:

  1. Install Lightroom Classic 8.2 on macOS 10.14.5
  2. Create a catalog
  3. Import a photo
  4. The photo will not have any warning icon

I am confident it is a bug, so I hope someone at Adobe will investigate the issue.
