migration from lightroom 6.14 to Lightroom Classic desktop

I have just installed LRC desktop from within my new creative cloud subscription.  I want LRC to use (migrate?) my Lightroom 6.14 catalog, but before I can look for the migrate option as suggested in some help searches I am being prompted to upgrade the LRC catalog or choose another catalog?  Not sure what to do and I am paranoid I will destroy my current Lightroom 6.14 catalog before it gets input to and then the default catalog for my new LRC desktop?

Correct answer tango17

If as you suggest I allow LRC to upgrade the catalog when I launch it, will that action result in LRC utilising the last version of the catalog I created when I last used Lightroom 6.14?

Yes

If so, will this mean LRC will then effectively become my new desktop Lightroom software?

I would phrase it by saying you now use Lightroom Classic and you no longer use Lightroom.

If not, what additional steps do I need to take to ensure LRC is using my most current catalog and library?

No additional steps.

Lastly, once I am confident my new LRC software is using the correct catalog and referencing my Lightroom photo library, can I proceed to delete the old Lightroom 6.14 software off my PC?

Yes

All looks good after the upgrade! Once again, thanks very much for all your help!
Now all I have to do is work out what all the extra edit sliders in LRC do! - but I have plenty of time to work that out!
Cheers

So there is a lot of confusion out there regarding the names of Adobe software. You are using Lightroom Classic, but there is other software named Lightroom. The names are very similar, it is important to keep them separated in your mind.

When you use Lightroom Classic, you do want to upgrade the catalog. When you use Lightroom, you want to migrate.

So you definitely want to allow Lightroom Classic to upgrade the catalog. Unless you actually want to use Lightroom.

I hope that's clear now.

If not, what additional steps do I need to take to ensure LRC is using my most current catalog and library?

Apologies for all the dumb questions but this is all rather confusing to me as I have only ever used standalone Lightroom desktop software as a repository for my photo library and for basic photo editing. I never expected to have to migrate to a new photo software product and I am only moving to LRC in preparation for my upgrade from Windows10 to Windows11.
