Question

Missing folders

I disconnected my external hard drive where I store all my folders in LR.  The catalogue is on the main computer hard drive.  When I reconnected the external HD, there was an exclamation mark beside the name of the drive (Seagate), and all the folders had question marks beside them, and all were greyed out.

I clicked on the main name of the drive at top of "Folders" and chose "Synchronize".  After the process had stopped, everything had disappeared!  So, no catalogue or folders showing in LR panels at all.

How do I get the catalogue back into LR, and the images/folders? Thank you.

Synchronize Folder never fixes the problem indicated by these exclamation point icons, but it can certainly make it worse. If all the folders were greyed out, it probably indicates that the disk couldn't be found.

I think the easiest thing to do is to restore a recent backup of your catalog file, and try to fix the problem if it shows up in the backup as well. If the problem still appears in the backup, show us a screen capture of what you see and then we can advise further. DO NOT synchronize the folders.

@Auckland2

I see that you have had problems with missing folders before.

I clicked on the main name of the drive at top of "Folders" and chose "Synchronize".

I'm not a Mac user, so I'm not sure about this statement. If the drive was missing and the folders were missing, then there is no "Synchronize" option that I'm aware of.

@drtonyb  is correct. If your folders are really missing, then Lightroom will not offer a menu to synchronize them because that would be impossible. Please post a screenshot that illustrates the problem. Do not attach it, but embed it in your message using this button.
