Missing previews

I have several years worth of images catalogued and stored in Lightroom. At the end of each year I remove the images to back up storage but Lightroom always retains the previews which is amazing as if I need to look for anything Lightroom helps me find the exact images without having to go through backup files. I was recently asked by lightroom to upgrade my catalogue to a newer version which I did but all the old previews for images no longer on my pc have gone. Can anybody help me locate the previews again?

There is no need to locate previews, if Lightroom doesn't have the previews, it will regenerate them.

However, it may be that you have moved the photos to a different disk, and didn't tell LR they are on a different disk. In that case, LR can't generate previews because it doesn't know where the photos are.

Do you see exclamation point icons on the photos in the Grid view (as illustrated here in Figures 1 and 2), or question mark icons?
