Question

Moving files within Lightroom is Slow

Issue:

  • Lightroom Classic Version Number: 12.0.1
  • OS Version Number: Windows 11 Home 22H2 22621.819

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Import/create a folder with 1,000+ raw images, say 20MP CR3 files from R6
  2. Create a subfolder inside this folder from Lightroom
  3. Move the files from the top folder to the subfolder

Expected result: similar experience to Window's File Explorer, which is probably just a reindexing of the file path, probably done in on batched operation
Actual result: it felt like Lightroom is creating one move call for each individual file

LR has always been slower at moving large numbers of files than Finder or File Explorer.  There are also very infrequent but persistent reports that LR sometimes loses files when moving large numbers of them.  Consequently, many of us recommend that when moving large number of files, you do it with Finder / Explore and then reconnect the LR catalog to their new location.  See here for details:

Thanks for replying and linking useful information. But yeah... well, "has always been" is not "not a bug" or "software behaving as designed". I was just voicing my opinion in the original report.
