Multiple HDR "new feature" related questions

Hi all - very much enjoying the new HDR functionality - but I'm a bit confused by how it works in certain ways and hoping someone can help guide me.

For reference - I'm on an M1 MacBook Pro with Apple XDR display which is full HDR capable. Also, I'm still on MacOS Ventura 13.4.1 (not Sonoma yet)

  1.  When going to full screen preview - the image is no longer in HDR, it only shows in SDR. Is this a bug? Or something system limted by my M1 MBP?
  2.  I can't seem to find a format to export to such that MacOS will then open it in HDR properly. Instead I just get the SDR image displayed. Is there a specific format I need to export in, or a specific preview tool (like Preivew or Photos or something else) in MacOS that should recognise and open the exported image in HDR? I've tried JPEG, JPEG XL, AVIF, TIFF and the various HDR colour space options but nothing seems to work.

Hoping someone can help advise how to view these wonderful HDR pics I can now create - without having to be in Lightroom Develop module only!

For question 1, as you found later in the thread, that's a known limitation atm. Adobe hasn't given a timeline for supporting HDR in the full screen preview

For question 2: AVIF and JXL will work if you're on Sonoma for the Photos app, and I believe Preview? Ventura does not support HDR still images from the built-in apps, although Chrome will still work with AVIFs.

Actually just noticed a section in the Lightroom HDR manual that answers my 1st question. Seems this is just a limitation of Lightroom itself for now. Pasted below for anyone else who missed it too.

HDR Display

Lightroom Classic Develop module supports the display of HDR content in the Develop loupe view only. This includes side-by-side and split views. However, Lightroom Classic currently does not support HDR display in the Library module, Slideshow module, Full-screen view, the Filmstrip thumbnails or in other dialogs that display photo content, such as the Merge to HDRMerge to Panorama, or Enhance dialogs.

And Adobe fouled up the SDR Histogram just to make it work for the HDR Treatment. Just for a very very few that have the rig to support it, for the even fewer of those that will use it, for a feature that is very limited in actual use.

Hi - not quite sure what you're trying to explain, but appreciate you trying to help.

When I'm in Lightroom, in the Develop Module - I can see everything fine in HDR and the historgram works fine (there is no red like there is showing in the screenshot).

My question is all about being able to see the HDR image in full screen preview in Lightroom, or in the Library module, or outside of Lightroom.

I'm surprised that the Develop module can show the HDR image fine, but the Lightroom full screen preview is still just SDR only.

Also surprised that Preview or Photos in MacOS Ventura can't show exported images in HDR either - they only show in SDR. But having read the Lightroom info about this latest HDR update, this seems to be acknowledged.
