My external 5T HD out of space. How to start another external HD using LR

I use Lightroom Classic (subscription) and I keep my images on a 5T external portable hard drive, which I back up to 2 other 5T drives...also full.  I will soon need to switch to something like a RAID system.  But I have a big event coming up next week, and I'm looking for a way to store my new images as well as continue to be able to edit them in LR.  I have an empty 2T drive I can save the new images to, but I don't know how to also access Lightroom from that drive.  Is it possible to also copy my software LR files to that hard drive?  Can someone please help....and be specific please.  I'm not all that computer savvy.  🙂   Thanks!  I use a MAC computer with Mojave version 10.14.6

Typically what happens when you connect a camera or card reader is that Mac OS X pops up Image Capture app. You can either simply close that since you will be using the Lightroom import screen or you can actually completely turn that off. If I remember correctly, there should be a button in Image Capture to keep it from poppping up.

In Lightroom Classic, with the card inserted, you should click on the import button that is in the bottom left of the screen in the Library view. In the interface that pops up, select the card to import from. Typically there are two places to do that (confusing indeed) and if you are on Mac OS X catalina, there is a bug in this display that will make your main harddisk show up twice. Now on the top make sure you select "Copy" and at the right, make sure you select the correct destination on your external hard disk.

Here are two good videos about importing in Classic (it used to be called Lightroom CC but everything is still the same)

What are you using to import? It sounds like you are using the Mac OS X importer (I think it is called image capture) and not Lightroom. You should import using Lightroom Classic instead. For the files you already placed on the external, you can just drag the folder or the files onto Lightroom zclassic in your Dock on your computer and the import screen in Lightroom Classic should open. Use add to import and the images should show up inside Classic.

Jao_vdL.....Thanks so much!  I got the part about the files I've already placed on the external.  I did what you said, dragging the folder to LR Classic on my dock, and it worked!    But I'm sorry I don't know how to import using LR Classic, which obviously would be preferable.   Do I need to have the LR software loaded on the new drive?   Currently, I can only use LR when my MAIN photo drive (the full 5T drive) is inserted.

It wouldn't be necessary to put any Lightroom files on that other external hard drive. All that would be necessary would be for you to identify a folder on that additional hard drive as the destination for the import of the images from this upcoming event. Then the images would be imported to that folder and Lightroom would manage the images from that location just like it manages images from the other hard drives. I have images located on three different hard drives, but Lightroom is only installed on my main hard drive once.

JimHess.....thanks for your response.  I'm wondering what I am missing though.  I did a trial and I still wasn't able to access Lightroom.  Here is what I did.   I inserted the new empty 2T hard drive.  Then I imported some images from a card in a card reader.  Those images did not appear on my screen.  I had to go in to the EOS DIGITAL drive in the left column.  There I found the images, which I dragged to the folder I had created in the new drive.  BUT, when I clicked on the images in that folder, they opened in Photoshop, not Lightroom.  Plus, there were X's on each image, and I wasn't sure what that meant.  I'm obviously missing some simple thing in this process.  Can you offer any further assistance?  Thanks so much!
