Noise reduction

Hi I work in LRC at the moment and when I use the new noise reduction function the photo's selection with Attribute (five *) gets back to no selection after the file is tranferred to the DNG file. Second item is that I'm not glad that the file description is changed to Enhanced-NR.DNG, I doesn't need the "enhanced"-NR" description for me, can this be removed from the filename easily?

I view this new Denoise feature introduced in LrC 12.4 as a  work in progress and we should expect changes. See the article by Eric Chan of Adobe,

He even mentioned "not needing a new DNG file.

There is a logic to this: the denoised file is a new file, not a replacement of the original. The denoised file is a demosaiced llinear dng, and this is an irreversible process. You do not have access to the original mosaic sensor data in this new file. Do not delete the original!

 

What if your original is also a dng? Would you still want them to have the same name?

    Hi I only work with the RAW files and one of the pro's of LR is that it doesn't change the original file and al changes are stored in the catalog. This however is another new file with the changes done before the Denoise action was done so another way of storing my files plus on top of that I have to files now and may not delete the RAW file which meens I have no a 49 MN raw file and a DNG file of 73 MB. that is a increase of more then double of my disk space! Now I can continu on the old way (my excuse that I missed that) on these photo's becuase the reason for that is that most of these phote's will be used on a smartphone, Ipad or at the most on a Smart TV So don't need the high quality fror that. So please ADobe keep the possibility for me to chose between Manual Noise Reduction and the Denoise reduction as a new DNG. This will keep me going with LRC and saves a lot of processing time now. Thanks all for your clear explanations and help!

    This has all been explained.

    • You have the choice between manual noise reduction and Denoise. Manual still works just like it always has. Nothing has been taken away.
    • Yes, the Denoise/Enhance DNG is much bigger because it is demosaiced. That means three channels, R, G and B, as opposed to just one as in a mosaic raw file straight from the camera sensor.
    • A new file is created because the way these algorithms work, the process is irreversible. You can't go back to the original raw data.

      Currently, you can only do that by renaming the file using a plugin:

      You can't stop the addition of Enhanced-NR.DNG to the file name. Nor is there any way to remove it other than manually one-at-a-time.

       

      I don't know why your five star attribute isn't transferred.

      So when I make a selection out of my (2000) photo's and rate them with five stars, I Denoise, what is working perfectly,  them because of the denoise action the selection is disabled. It doen'st removes the rate of five start but the photo's are not selected anymore. So I have to atribute and click on the selection of five stars and then I can continue working on this. Not very friendly, hope adobe will be able to create a better way for this. 

      Then the imagines I have to send to a customer and I use the file name includes the number, it now excist with a extra discription "Enhanced-NR" what is not interesting and of any more information for my client. and if I want to renema or delete this text section I have to do that manually.... Not so happy about that is there another way?

      Firstly, so far as what your client sees, if you are exporting a copy (e.g. a JPG) you can dynamically name this copy as you wish. One way is to construct a file name that includes just the numeric part of the original filename. So, if the original imported Raw file is IMG12345.NEF, and then you make a noise-reduced file IMG12345-Enhanced-NR.DNG  - your exports can be named (for example) "yourname-[capturedate]-[original image number]" and the relevant capture date and otiginal image number (in this case, 12345) would be used for each one. The same works when an externally edited version is made, e.g. in Photoshop. So long as the filename of that PSD or TIFF or NR DNG includes the '12345' sequence of characters such that LrC can extract it, that number can be selectively used for naming an export - producing an end result no different than if PS, or NR, had not been used.

       

      So far as the usability aspects: the previous NR workflow (parametric adjustments in the Detail panel) has not been removed, gives no worse results than it did before, and behaves the same as before. So if familiarity is the most important, that is still available. OTOH whenever we begin using some entirely novel feature, some departure from one's familiar detailed workflow is only to be expected.

       

      It can't, realistically, be simultaneously "better than", and "the same as" !

       

      Which version should be highlighted after creating a new NR version? - if either - I am not even sure. This aspect may develop further, and user feedback might be an influence so you could post your preference as an Idea.

       

      I do agree it's appropriate that star ratings etc should be duplicated onto the new photo version.
