Question

Only push Smart Previews from LR classic to the cloud and work on them from LR CC

Hello everyone,

I recently got a Lightroom pack (LR CC, LR classic & PS), and as I do not need cloud storage for my RAW files (and therefore opted for the much more affordable 20GB option), I would like to use it as such:

- From wherever I am (I travel a lot), I would add my photos to LR CC on my iPad.

- These RAW files would be pushed to the cloud

- My LR classic (at home) would download them, store them on my local drive, and create Smart Previews for all of them automatically

- Once done, the RAW files in the cloud would be deleted and replaced by the smart previews just created, on which I could work from my iPad

I have been scrolling through all the posts I could find that were at least remotely related to such kind of setup but couldn't find any decent explaination about how to do it, and I couldn't believe such an option wouldn't be available on the Adobe suite.

I highly appreciate your help here! 🙂

I use a similar workflow to what you have described. Have you tested it? Import your raw images to Lr on your iPad, confirm sync to Lightroom Web, confirm that you've downloaded originals to external drive. The images in the web/browser version will be smart previews so you won't be able to download high-res (originals) from there. The step that I didn't see in your workflow is where  you designate the location for your originals to be downloaded. In order to select the location you  will need to open Lightroom (Not Classic) and choose the location from settings there.

Hello there!

I did not indeed select a location to store my pictures on LR desktop (I did on classic, not on CC).

I will test your workflow then and come back to you once done!

Thanks a lot for your reply! 🙂

You could only do it manually as by design all files imported into the eco system via phone, tablet web app or Lightroom 2.4.1 desktop version is stored in the cloud as an original.

Lightroom Classic stores smart previews for selected photos added to a synchronized collection.

Hi Jon,

Thanks a lot for your reply!

Alright, sad to see the system isn't as smart as it should 😉

So let's look at the problem under another angle; let's assume I won't be importing photos via any version of Lightroom anymore but only through Lightroom classic, how could I do so that only smart previews will be pushed to the cloud (and no RAW files) to be used from other devices?

Thanks again! 🙂

If you import directly into Classic you can automatically add the images to a collection. The import dialog has an “add to collection” option. You can choose an existing collection or click the plus icon to create a newly named collection. Then simply add a checkmark to the left of the collection name in the Collections Panel. Sync is activated/paused from under the name plate – hover top left until you see the small triangle icon appear. Click the icon to open the activity center. This would overcome the need to delete originals from the cloud.
